Mushroom preparation boosts anticancer immune response

AHCC, a special mushroom preparation, may be used as a supplement to prevent and help treat cancer, according to a study presented at the 16th International AHCC® (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) Symposium held in Sapporo, Japan on July 26th and 27th.

A study led by researchers from Japan and Yale School of Medicine confirmed that AHCC significantly boosts the immune system in a way that may help older Americans prevent cancer.

For the study, the researchers tested blood samples from normal healthy individuals age 50 or older who participated in the 60-day dietary supplementation to see how AHCC affected levels of two key cytokines.

Interferon (IFN-Y) and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF-alpha) are believed to play an important role in preventing the formation and spread of abnormal and cancerous cells.

They found these cytokines produced by white blood cells drastically increased in the blood within four weeks of taking the recommended dose of AHCC.

Additionally, the immune-boosting effect of AHCC lasted for at least one month after the supplementation stopped.

Another study suggested that the immune boosting effect of AHCC may serve to help prevent infections of bird flu virus H5N1, West Nile virus, the Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the Klebsiella pnuemoniae and the Candida albicans viruses.

The review study was conducted by Dr. Barry Ritz of Drexel University’s Department of Biotechnology and scheduled to appear in the upcoming Nutritional Reviews Journal. The results were also presented at the conference.

AHCC is prepared from several medicinal mushrooms, cultivated in Japan and prepared from a special manufacturing process. AHCC has already become a leading immune enhancing supplement in Japan and used hundreds of hospitals and health facilities worldwide as a preventative for incoming patients to prevent hospital infections.

AHCC is produced by Amino Up Chemical Company in Sapporo, Japan and is distributed to the United States by Maypro Industries.
